1.Simplex and SKF seals

Robust sealing performance

For most machinery, even small oil leaks can be a big problem. Today’s increasingly aggressive lubricants can threaten seal performance, damaging vital equipment which can lead to unplanned maintenance.

With the right seals you can reduce friction, retain lubricity and keep contaminants out of the system. Simplex and SKF seals are available in a range of designs, sizes and materials and can be delivered around the globe, fast. SKF Marine helps identify the right seal for each individual application and all our products and solutions are designed to give you cost-effective, reliable sealing performance.

Simplex sterntube seals

Ineffective marine seals can be prone to water ingress that can be damaging to the system as it causes less lubricity and more corrosion. Add an oil leakage into the mix and you could face considerable maintenance costs and unplanned downtime. For over 70 years, Simplex sterntube seals have offered the marine industry a solution. Designed to prevent the ingress of water and to avoid lubricating oil leakage, the comprehensive range of Simplex seals is rounded off by intermediate shaft bearings, sterntube bushes as well as the Simplex FlexiTube and SternTube, packages which includes bearings, seals and bushes as complete turnkey solutions.

Simplex bulkhead seals

Where bulkhead openings for shafts need to be sealed to protect adjoining spaces against flooding, Simplex bulkhead seals offer the optimum solution.

Simplex bulkhead seals for chemical and product tankers, gas tankers and offshore vessels are self-lubricating and designed to seal bulkhead openings for shafts and protect adjoining spaces against such dangers.

In the event of an accident, avoid flooding-related compartments by using the Simplex Centrax bulkhead seal. Designed to seal the rotating shafts against the bulkheads, radial and axial movements are easily absorbed, and no additional lubrication is needed due to the self-lubricating properties of the carbon sealing rings located directly on the shaft itself. A variant of the Simplex Centrax, the Simplex Centrax S offers additional compensation for large radial displacements of the shaft. It consists of an inside and outside casing. The inside ring is inserted into an outside housing ring.

Based on the Simplex forward lip ring seal design, two facing sealing rings filled with oil act as a barrier chamber. This chamber is connected to a 15/30 l oil tank that permanently lubricates and cools the oil with a circulator.

For high shaft speeds, a back-to-back arrangement of the sealing rings in combination with applicative grease can be delivered. A grease dosing unit provides the optimum grease level.

The Simplex bulkhead gas-tight seal can also be supplied as a complete axially split version. This seal is designed for in-situ overhaul in accordance with certified and approved Simplex repair standards.

An optional (split) adapter flange is available for all Simplex bulkhead seals to allow the recess, the pitch circle and the outer diameters to be adapted to match the required dimensions. This allows shaft flanges, couplings, bearings etc. to be connected through the bulkhead.

Simplex net protection solutions

Tough marine environments can play havoc on an aft seal’s effectiveness – dirt, fishing lines, and nets can all be responsible for mounting maintenance costs. SIMPLEX net protection solutions include three options, used individually or in combination, for protecting the aft seal from damage caused by fishing nets or lines.

Dirt, net and rope protection ring for effective aft seal protection against dirt, fishing nets and lines.

Knife blades for aft seal protection against fishing nets and lines.

Net and rope collecting ring for optimum aft seal protection against fishing nets and lines.

Simplex cutter and pump gear bulkhead seals

Arguably the most important parts of dredging equipment are the cutter head and the dredge pump, to cut and transport the dredging spoil. As they are located in the machine room, protecting this equipment is crucial.

Simplex cutter and pump gear bulkhead seals safeguard the cutter suction dredger’s machine rooms for pump and cutter gear. The lip and face type seals, as well as combined seals, can be customized to individual needs and are in line with environmental rules and regulations. Choose from pump gear bulkhead seals, cutter gear bulkhead seals. Simplex seals for gearboxes (cutter head gearbox and pump gearbox) or Special Simplex seal solutions for main shaft (environmentally friendly).

In addition, you can find a range of seal accessories such as flushing and circulation units, and net protection solutions on hand.

Axial shaft seals

If contaminants enter the bearing area of a vessel’s axial shaft, they can pollute the lubricant, causing corrosion and premature bearing failure. To combat these issues, axial shaft seals are designed as a suitable secondary seal in applications where seals are subjected to excessive quantities of contaminants. They are available as V-ring seals, metal-clad V-type sealing rings, axial clamp seals and mechanical seals.

With the exception of axial clamp seals, axial shaft seals rotate with the shaft and act as flingers, tolerating small misalignments of the shaft and providing reliable sealing if the shaft is out of round or rotates eccentrically.

Radial shaft seals

The use of aggressive lubricants increases the risk of leaks by threatening seal performance. For most machinery, even small oil leaks can be a big problem. Designed to provide an optimized radial load, radial shaft seals are manufactured with a specifically engineered elastomeric compound to offer better oil compatibility.

Hydraulic seals for propeller hubs

Hydraulic applications can be challenging for seals. Not only do they need to prevent leakage of fluid from the cylinder, but also withstand high pressures, extreme temperatures and transverse forces within the cylinder. Hydraulic cylinders also require static sealing solutions including O-rings and, more often than not, back-up rings.

To address these challenges, SKF’s hydraulic seals for propeller hubs are designed for use in hydraulic cylinders with reciprocating movements or other applications, such as the propeller hub of CPP systems. They help retain lubricants, exclude contaminants and maintain hydraulic pressure. As these tasks require a variety of different seal designs, SKF can match individual application requirements for rock hammer seals, piston seals, rod seals, wiper seals, guide rings and guide strips.
